Art and nature come together on San Juan Island through a variety of classes and workshops provided by the Westcott Bay Institute.

Attend one or several of our educational workshops that you will find below. Our workshop series this year offers a variety of topics from painting to sculpting, plants and ecology.


Junk has Soul: Sculpting with Recycled Objects
with Thor Myhre

Sat., May 10; 12:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Tuition: $55;

Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Students will be inspired by a truckload of found objects and recycled materials. Odd shapes of wood, colorful wire, string, feathers, wool and objects of metal and plastic will be provided. Thor’s specialty is creating art out of other peoples’ junk. Students will learn about great resources for future projects and walk away with a newfound sense of the beauty in everyday trash.

Thor Myhre uses recycled antique metals, such as old farming implements as the primary materials for his original sculptures. His art is featured in many sculpture parks and galleries in the US. He received a juror’s choice award at big Rock Garden and was featured in the documentary “Rusty Flowers”. Learn more at www.thormyhre.com.


Edible & Medicinal Plants
with Dr. Ryan Drum

Location: To be announced. No dogs, please.
Ryan will introduce students to some of the dozens of edible plants he and his family have harvested regularly in the islands for the past 30 years. Preparation and storage methods will be discussed. As a practicing community and clinical medical herbalist, he has used many local plants to treat a wide variety of chronic and acute health problems. Case histories will be cited for many of the plants students will encounter.

Ryan Drum has been a professional herbal educator and practicing medical herbalist for thirty years. Dr. Drum has degrees in chemistry and phycology, and specializes in herbal, nutritional, dietary, and seaweed therapies. Learn more at www.ryandrum.com.


Wire & Bead Jewelry
with Tara Brisbine

Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Learn how to create one-of-a-kind professional, handcrafted jewelry. A brief introduction will be given on the tools provided in the supply fee. Also provided will be a class handout, copper wire for you to practice with, and a selection of freshwater pearls and semi precious stones. The first day’s project will be a wire linked pearl necklace. The second day will be spent making coiled wire hoops and bangles.

Tara Brisbine has worked and taught in various bead stores for the past nine years. She sells her jewelry and continues to travel nationwide as an instructor. Tara gathers much of her inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of the Northwest.


Basket Weave Jewelry

Prerequisite: Students must have either taken the wire workshop in the previous years or have wireworking
experience (i.e. working with tools and
forming wire-wrapped links).
Learn to encase a beautiful gemstone bead with hair-like fine wire by coiling and basket-weaving an intricate wire bezel. This technique frames stones with your own artistic touch and skill, transforming them into personal treasure. The process will alter your view of beads and gemstones and bring a whole new dimension to your wirework, allowing you to incorporate more skill into your finished jewelry.

How to Make Your Own Driftwood Box
with Richard Nevels

Combining an informal yet informative lecture with hands-on experience, you will learn box making basics and beachcombing lore. Plus, at the end of the day, go home with your very own driftwood box! Mid-day, the class will convene at Jackson Beach for a brown bag lunch and beachcombing. Richard will teach you how to identify different species of wood and what constitutes good boxmaking driftwood.

Richard Nevels, master boxmaker and professional beachcomber, has been making one-of-a-kind driftwood boxes for 25 years, marketed under the False Bay Boxes brand. From Washington to New Mexico, his work has appeared in many juried craft fairs and dozens of fine craft galleries.


Seaweed Ramble
with Ryan Drum

All indigenous coastal people have eaten seaweeds, and all seaweeds are edible. Easily harvested local seaweeds will be identified and sampled. The uses of particular seaweeds for specific health problems such as heart disease, lung problems, thyroid issues, viruses, cancer prevention, and psychiatric disorders will also be described.

Advanced Driftwood Box Making
with Richard Nevels

Skill Level: basic box making skills or previous band saw experience
Take your box making skills to the next level with one on one mentoring, plus hands on carving, sanding, and finishing. Learn the proper balance and body movements required to confidently operate large power tools. Discover the wonders of the “wave cut” and other box making secrets.

Concrete Cast Leaves
with Debbie Pigman

Sat., June 28; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Age: 16 and older;

Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Learn the basics of casting concrete leaves including ingredients, mixing, additives, and painting. Learn about leaves suitable for casting and select several leaves from those provided to cast yourself. Practice painting on cast leaves provided by the instructor. Curing takes more than one day, but you will be able to take your pieces home and apply what you learn in class to finish them.

Debbie Pigman moved to San Juan Island in 1997 to embrace the small community lifestyle and pursue her interest in the arts. Her main love is hand-built pottery, and she has recently branched into casting. Her training has been through workshops and experimentation.


Learn to Play the Harmonica
with Kirk Fuhrmeister

Age: 8 to Adult (under 12 w/adult); Skill level: Beginner
Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Harmonica is a wonderful “take it with you” melodic instrument. This class will take the beginner through a brief history of the “French harp” and teach some basic harmonic theory and practical exercises. Students will be playing tunes by class end!

Kirk Fuhrmeister majored in sculpture and is a custom wood worker and music store owner. He has been a musical instigator, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, and teacher on San Juan Island for thirty-four years.


Techniques of Stone Carving
with Tom Small

Fri. & Sat., July 5 – 6; 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Tuition: $115;
Supply fee: $40; optional carving tool kit: $130 (pre-order by June 6). Supply fee and tool kit cost to be paid on first day of class directly to instructor.
Age: 10 – 100;
Skill levels: Beginner through Intermediate
Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
This class will cover hand carving limestone and other new, exciting stones using chisels, hammers, and files. Demonstrations of a full range of power tools will be included with some opportunity for students to try them out. Students may purchase a beginner’s tool set if they contact the Institute by June 6, or they can bring their own. Limited tools will also be available to borrow from the instructor.

Tom Small studied sculpture at the University of Washington and exhibits his work at the Westcott Bay Sculpture Park, Waterworks Gallery on San Juan Island, the Stonearium in Seattle, and in many national collections. Learn more about Tom at www.tomsmallsculpture.com.


Sculptural Bead Embroidery
with Rebecca Roush

Age: 16 or older
Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Using needle and thread to create complex works, students will build a felt form of their hand and apply a variety of media on and around the form, making a unique piece of sculptural art. They will learn the skills necessary to continue these techniques on their own. Starting with the production of a sampler, students will use time, 1-on-1 instruction, and specific techniques to create their own piece of sculptural bead embroidery.

Rebecca Roush has been teaching workshops in the Northwest since 2001. This three day workshop grounds students in specific techniques, and her students are always pleased with the final results. Rebecca’s classes are lively memorable, and highly productive. Learn more at www.rebeccaroush.com.


Ukulele Playshop
with Kirk Fuhrmeister

Sun., July 13; 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Age: 8 and up
Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
The ukulele is a marvelous little instrument that is small, easy to pack around and uses some of the same chord shapes as the guitar, making it a wonderful first instrument. The ukulele is also a serious instrument and can be as challenging as the player wants. Join Kirk in learning to play this versatile instrument. “We will play as much as we sing and laugh as much as we play.” There will be ukuleles available for use at the workshop.

Sculptural Hybridized Cement
with Donald Latimer

July 19 & 20; Sat. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuition: $170;

Age: 14 to adult;
Skill level: All levels
Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
This two-day workshop is an introduction to the varied uses of cement and the hybridized Portland cement, Milestone. Techniques practiced in the workshop are applicable to the creation of wall murals, low relief artwork, and sculpture for indoors and out. Students will create samples (not necessarily completed works of art) as they practice using masonry materials with colorful pigments, and structural metal lath.

Seattle craftsman, Don Miles, created Milestone Hybridized Portland Cement. Miles created this product to provide artists, artisans, and craftspeople with a highly versatile product that allows its users to expand their creative talents with the confidence that their finished products will last.


Learn to Play the Native American Flute
with Lavelle Foos

Location: At the artist’s studio on Cady Mountain
Have you ever wanted to learn to play the Native American Flute? This is your opportunity to learn an instrument with which you can easily create beautiful music. This class will give you skills in playing music that can soothe the Heart & Soul and inspire your personal creativity. Lavelle will teach you finger placement, various ways to use your breath, and work with you to find your personal style and feeling. You will leave the class with a cedar flute and instructional CD.

Lavelle Foos has been playing the Native American Flute for 15 years as a way to experience the beauty and wonder of her own mystery. She has acquired flutes in 18 different keys for different tones and moods. Lavelle is a musician of 45 years including guitar and vocal and is a performing artist with the flutes. Precious Treasures
with Rhonda Scott

This workshop will teach you how to create beautiful jewelry out of Precious Metal Clay (silver dust compound mixed with organic binder that magically transforms into fine silver when fired) using molds Sculptural Bead Embroidery, by Rebecca Roush and rubber stamps. At the end of the workshop you will leave with a beautiful necklace or bracelet of your own design and the knowledge and inspiration to create more.

Rhonda Scott is a certified Precious Metal Clay teacher. She has been creating and selling wonderful jewelry since 1979. Her work and techniques have been published in many jewelry magazines and books including the international magazine Belle Armoire®.


Found Object Art Necklace

Fabulous, fun, and funky! Come join Rhonda for a wonderful exploration of found objects jewelry and art. We will take various objects from treasure, to junk and create a wonderful wearable recycled art neckpiece. Rhonda will be teaching cold connections, patina methods, tin smithing, etc... You will leave with a necklace or bracelet created with all that old unused junk you’ve collected for years and the ability to create more beautiful jewelry out of recycled items.

Oil Pastels
with Susan Bennerstrom

Location: Westcott Bay Sculpture Park
Oil pastels are an under-explored, but amazingly versatile and forgiving medium. In this workshop, intended for all levels of experience, we will begin with a brief review of basic strokes, mixing color on paper, layering, and working with values. Students will complete several compositions, each of which is designed to be both fun and challenging, Students will discover the many similarities as well as differences between chalk and oil pastels, for example, oil’s translucency, which is suited to creating an illusion of light.

Susan Bennerstrom’s oil and chalk pastel have been exhibited in solo shows all over the world. She has received many awards including a Pollock-Krasner Award in 2004. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Whatcom Museum and Western Washington University. Learn more at www.susanbennerstrom.com.


Plein-air Oil Painting
with David Ridgway

Sat. & Sun., Aug. 16 & 17;

Tuition: $95
Age: 18 & older;
Skill level: Intermediate
Location: Orcas Island, Eastsound
Students will have the opportunity to do two small paintings of the local scene each day, focusing on the townscape of Eastsound. Plan to keep the elements simple and the brushwork confident. The use of strong color and bold shapes to describe the location will be our intention. There will be some instruction and a group critique but primarily we are there to paint and learn by doing.

David Ridgway has been painting professionally for over 20 years. He paints in his Eastsound studio and enjoys working on location for the sense of immediacy and connection it brings. Many of his paintings continue to investigate the relationship between man, the rural and sub-rural landscape. The Art of Marketing

In this fun and collaborative workshop you will learn what buyers are looking for in artwork and what galleries are looking for in artists; whether you or your artwork are ready to be marketed; where your best markets are; how to price your work; how to approach galleries and talk about your work; and how to increase your exposure via direct mail, web sites, advertising, and publicity.

Marty Rudolph brings over 30 years of marketing experience to artists and galleries thru her coaching, consulting, and gallery trainings. Active in the National Art Marketplace, Marty brings artists the current market trends in retail and wholesale art buying as well as years of do-it-yourself marketing success strategies. Enrollment & Cancellation Policy:  Enrollment is by first-come, first served basis.  Full tuition must be received to reserve a space in a workshop.  If you must cancel your registration, you will receive a full refund less a $25 administrative fee, providing written notice is received 21 calendar days of the start of the workshop.  Refunds will be issued by check only.  If you enroll in a workshop and then wish to switch to a different workshop, the cancellation policy above will apply.
